It's Western States Week!

So I just checked the list of frontrunners for the women and this is what it looks like age-wise: 42, 50, 40, 47, 32 and 44. The average age of the leading women vying for the 2011 Western States 100 mile trail run title falls in my age group. That's some smoking company. Are my fast years still to come?

(With Dana and Tina at training weekend. Not frontrunners.)

Or have I peaked? Am I peaking now? Is my peak ahead? Scratch that. I don't I want to know. If someone told me right now that I would never get any better than I am at this moment? I mean, what would I spend the rest of my life doing? I'd have to keep finding new things to do where I have no benchmark - or at least a pretty abysmal one. Water polo, surfing, golf, kite boarding, ice hockey, ski racing, throwing a softball, a handstand pushup, tennis, rugby...okay, I guess I have a strong enough supply of backup options IF that ever happened. Okay. I'm okay. Deep breaths.

It's the week before Western States, people. All the best to the hundreds of runners who will line up at the base of Squaw Valley on Saturday and start their 100 mile journey up a snow-covered mountain. And to the very first trail runner I ever knew - or at least knew was a trail runner - Rick Gaston: I hope you have an incredible weekend. And to Kara, the runner to my pacer that was not meant to be in 2011, there will be other 100s to conquer. Keep the comeback slow and steady.
