You Never Forget Your First

Last weekend, on a cool, cloudy morning in Pasadena, my one and only nephew, Austin, launched his endurance career with a blistering 1/2k performance in the Kids Fun Run.

(Contemplating race strategy)

Say what you will about first poops in the toilet, first words, first steps - but his first event? Are you kidding me? This was the stuff of dreams - of my dreams. Of my dreams for him, for my brother, for anyone who feels the excitement of lining up at a race start the very first time.

But even better, this was my blood. My little guy. The first in the family to race a 1/2 k. Visions of being the best parent EVER filled my head as I shared the story over and over again with anyone who would listen. In his short 3 years of life, I've never been prouder.

(Already on top of his hydration needs)

Big props to organizers of events like the Pasadena Marathon that offer Kids Fun Runs and encourage families to come out and volunteer. I still remember slapping high fives with kids along the course of the Boston Marathon and seeing them out of the corner of my eye reacting like they'd just high-fived Michael Jordan. Okay, I may be exaggerating just a tad but I swear they smiled. More importantly, they made me smile.

(A first medal)

People, get your kids out in the community and participate in a running event. Cheer, race, volunteer, whatever.

Austin, Auntie Sammy will send you a training plan shortly. Work your core in the meantime.
