Crossfit sectionals came to Norcal 2 weeks ago and with it, once again, the notion that I would rededicate myself to my training - clean and jerks, Fran, paleo, pull-ups, even stretching - and kick some ass. Somewhere.
Don't get me wrong, I hit my beloved, addictive, sweaty, supportive CF almost 4x a week but often times I'm sore or tired from [insert activity here] and suffer from FOMO (fear of missing out) so taking a day off or cutting back on something else doesn't factor in despite the recommendations of my coach, Saul, who says active rest IS part of training and I'm sure I remember reading about that a dozen times before but my innate ability has always been my ability to endure and that doesn't really factor in on a sensible 1 on/1 off workout schedule, besides which, I don't generally think of what I do as "workouts" per se but things I enjoy doing with people I enjoy doing them with until, of course, I don't exactly enjoy doing them because it's cold/hot, wet/windy or I'm just tired/feeling fat and then that activity does in fact become a workout but because I suffer from FOMO I will myself to get going and of course, once I do, all is usually better.
But I digress....
I was simply feeling inspired. Over 400 people were out competing for the top 20 spots that would advance them to the Regional qualifying round. 5 of my fellow CF'ers from Mad Dawg Fitness were there, having trained with focus and determination the past few months, eating for optimum nutrition, practicing the prescribed workouts in the final week and then heading out to do their best in what may be the most stacked sectionals in the country.
The workouts were brutal (see sample below), the sun hot, the bars sweaty and the competition...awesome. The most jaw-dropping physiques roamed the soccer field, to be sure, but alongside them were average looking guys and girls, washboard abs and bare skin competing next to full-figured bodies in over-sized shirts. It was inspiring to see everyone going all-out. As a volunteer judge I was up close during the men's competitions, simultaneously scoring, counting out splits, encouraging, and sometimes yelling at someone to get back up on the pullup bar and finish a round out. NOW.
It's just an utterly addictive environment to be around. Supportive. Dedicated. Energizing. Crossfit, Mad Dawg, Saul, I love you! Handstand push-up, I will OWN you! Soon. Hopefully. On 3, 2, 1...Go!
