September? Already?

How is it September already? Where did August go?

Let's see, paddle, paddle, paddle, Crossfit, visit from Mom, work. Oh, Outside Lands came to San Francisco - 2nd year in a row. 3 days of music in Golden Gate Park with almost 100 bands. I was fortunate enough to score tix and a 1/2 day off to go on Friday when Pearl Jam was headlining. Met up with a random group of friends and acquaintances - from work, running, triathlons, softball - and we went straight through to the main stage to camp out for Built for Speed, Silversun Pickups, Incubus and Pearl Jam.

Amazingly, it was a warm, fog-free day in San Francisco that carried us through the performances into a fading sunset as Pearl Jam whipped out about 25 songs with a fervor that matched the crowd's enthusiasm. Highlights? Elderly Woman and a cover of The Who's The Real Me. Eddie ripped it all along, despite a sore throat. All around me almost everyone knew every word to every song. Naturally, I had to go find out what the names of most of the songs were the next day because I can never remember. I'm cool but far from really cool cool. Still, I was able to belt out my fair share and pretend I knew which songs Lori was talking about being the best.

Silversun Pickups also completely rocked and as someone noted, Brian Aubert looks like he's channeling Charles Manson-Billy Corgan. You need some sun, bro. Indie girl on bass accessory? Check. You were shaggy-haired, hipster-cute, girl. Highlights were There's No Secrets this Year and Panic Switch. Pickups brought big energy - I will definitely download the rest of your CD.

Incubus came out and went through a pretty tight set of songs . I was bummed they didn't perform Dig but enjoyed Love Hurts, Nice to Know You, Stellar - actually, pretty much the whole thing. Although I might have been slightly distracted by Brandon Boyd's slinking, shimmying, slow undress on stage, channeling every fantasy of rockstar glam. Well played, Brandon, well played.

All in all, awesome execution from the event organizers - good food, good mobility, good sound, good setting. The mid-outer Sunset was alive with concert-goers basking in the post-coitus glow of a great concert day and a rare, warm, tank top and flip flops night in the city. Unfortunately, I had to head home shortly thereafter because...

The next day was our SFOCC outrigger race in San Leandro where the women's novice crew was out to defend our 2 back-to-back first place finishes. With the warm temps continuing, the water was flat. Flat and unmoving. We started behind a few boats and slowly built our pace and power to draw even with the last women's crew between us and first place. We nipped them just as we went into the turn at the halfway point and never looked back. One of our strengths has been powering into the turns, giving our steersperson, Jessica, the open track to pick a line and generally move inside another boat to gain that extra few lengths. It was one of our best races; coming from behind and slowly working our boat to the front, seat by seat and then holding on as the 2nd boat tried to bridge the gap the rest of the way back. We've really come together as a crew...just as the season comes to an end.
