WTF?!

The build-up of hope, the fury against a church extending it's reach into our political landscape, and the weeks of passionate declarations condemning Prop 8 came crashing down around me last night. The pride and inspiration and emotion I felt watching both McCain's and Barak's speeches last night was marred shortly thereafter as the results started trickling in on California's propositions.

By morning when I reached for my blackberry to see the results, I was disgusted. Disgusted that 52% of the voters in California felt so strongly about same-sex couples being denied the right to marry. Something that doesn't impact anyone else in any way. How can you vote on a matter of equality in regards to other people's lives? Your children may be saved from the scourge of being taught about gay marriage but I would lobby for schools to teach about this divisive election year and the bigotry of a state, and the influence of a narrow-minded religion, and the equal rights movement that it precipitated. Because those of us who support the freedom of everyone to have equal rights, we grow in number each year. The battle was lost last night, but the war goes on. As history has shown with african americans and women, the fight will continue. And one day in the future people will look askance when told that years ago, in 2008, California turned out a majority of voters who granted chickens and pigs and cows extra living space to improve their quality of life and denied the lesbian and gay community the right to marriage.

I am embarrassed and ashamed today by the state I've called home for 18 years.

And Jeff Kent, you who I've stood by over the years as you offended legions of Giants fans with your terse, shoot-from-the-hip remarks and dismissive comments, you who supported women's sports at Cal so fervently, and you who contributed to Prop 8, you are forever dead to me. I hope you get early arthritis.

Very heartfelt thoughts, and needless to say Hanna and I are equally upset by this crushing blow. I want to post your "..pigs and chickens..." line on Facebook, it is quote-worthy.

Like you said, if history is a guide it will only be a matter of time.

You go Sam! Tell Jeff Kent, to suck it, too!

On a serious note, I'm really disappointed, sad and ashamed too.
